Seasonal Changes for San Juan National Forest Campgrounds and McPhee Reservoir

Durango, Colorado, September 20th, 2023 – The San Juan National Forest will soon begin closing some campgrounds and reducing services for the fall and winter season. Please check the San Juan National Forest’s campground status webpage before visiting the Forest to know what sites and services are available. Some campgrounds will remain open, but offer limited services, meaning there will be no camp hosts, trash pickup, water, electricity, and/or no toilets available.

Lodging Tax Panel

The Dolores County Commissioners are looking for 3 to 5 community members from the tourism industry to serve on a board which would make recommendations on how to administer the tourism and marketing fund from the lodging tax now being collected.

The panel would be required to decide how best to market tourism in Dolores County and provide recommendations to the County Commissioners once a year between August 15 & September 15th each year.  

Fire Restrictions to be lifted on San Juan National Forest effective August 31st

Fire Officials ask public to continue to practice fire safety and awareness

DURANGO, Colo., August 29th, 2023 – Fire restrictions on all National Forest System lands within the San Juan National Forest, including wilderness, will be rescinded - effective 12:01am Thursday, August 31st. Recent rains over the Forest have lessened the risk of wildland fire, allowing restrictions to be lifted. This means campfires are now allowed outside of established Forest Service campgrounds and recreation sites on the San Juan National Forest.

Firewood permits available on the San Juan National Forest May 1st

Durango, Colo., May 1, 2023 – The San Juan National Forest will begin selling permits for personal-use firewood cutting and other miscellaneous products on May 1st. Many forest roads are covered by more snow than in recent years, leading to a delay in re-opening the roads, so please contact your local ranger district for the latest road conditions or visit our road conditions webpage and read the associated news release for more information.
